Lovely hotel and location very convenient. However, the receptionist did her best to get our stay off to the most terrible start by insisting she absolutely could not check us in before 2 p.m. (even though the rooms were obviously ready - it was 1.30). She did not handle the situation well, if she had simply told us it was "hotel policy" then, ok, but she instead started lying, at one stage maintaining we could not have the rooms because the people who had been staying in them were "eating" (despite the fact that check-out time was 11 a.m. and there was clearly nobody in dining room!) Also, being a party of 8 we "had" to all check in together - ridiculous! When it finally came to check in we discovered we had 4 double rooms instead of twin rooms, even though we were a party of same-sex friends and obviously not couples. Incidentally, I had specifically written to the email address supplied by venere.com to request twin rooms but this request was not passed on by the website - making my effort a complete waste of time. We had to wait while the rooms were made up again because the room staff left at 3. Why was it then that the following day on returning to our rooms for a nap at 4.30 we discovered that not one of our 4 rooms, on 3 different floors had been cleaned? Putting the "Do not disturb" sign up we settled down for a nap only to be woken up 45 minutes later by the same squawking receptionist who decided she would disturb us to find out whether we wished to be disturbed by the maid!! It was a shame that the experience was marred by the incompetence of the reception staff as otherwise the hotel was really very good.
